ABLC mornings begin, as they always do, with coffee, conversations, and small acts of confusion. This year, a grandfather—tasked with entertaining his grandkids between sessions—handed them ABLC conference swag lip balms, confidently explaining how to speak into them as if they were microphones. The children obliged. For a moment, the room was full of voices, […]
By the time the Bioeconomy Policy Forum opened at ABLC 2026, the ground had already shifted. Oil had surged past $119 a barrel. The Strait of Hormuz was in play. And inside the room, the instruction was simple: be candid, be fierce, and don’t waste time pretending things are fine. “This session is notorious for […]
France is expanding its bioenergy sector to reduce its 100% fossil fuel import dependency, aiming for a 33% renewable energy share by 2030. Biogas is a major growth area, with biomethane grid injections hitting 2.4% of gas use in 2023, spurred by new feed-in tariffs. The transport sector is also transforming under the 2022 TIRUERT […]
Driven by a legally binding goal to reach carbon neutrality by 2035, Finland relies heavily on its vast forests, with biomass providing over 80% of its renewable energy. Recent milestones include the launch of Metsä Fibre’s biomethanol plant and massive district heating investments by Helen and Tampereen Energia. Furthermore, Finland is heavily investing in emerging […]
Austria is aggressively targeting climate neutrality by 2040 and a 100% renewable electricity supply by 2030. Bioenergy already accounts for 20% of the nation’s final energy consumption. Newsworthy developments include OMV’s €200 million pilot plant at the Vienna refinery, which co-processes biogenic and fossil feedstocks to cut 360,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. Additionally, the Syngas […]
At the beginning, it’s simple. Not easy—never easy—but simple. There is one problem, and it’s enormous: can this technology work? For years, that’s the mountain. Teams gather around it, capital circles it, skeptics point at it, believers climb it. Everything reduces to a single question: is this even possible? And then, one day, it is. […]
The Netherlands is drastically shifting its bioenergy policy, phasing out subsidies for biomass electricity and heat due to public health and sustainability concerns. Instead, the nation is prioritizing high-value biorefineries to produce chemicals, materials, and advanced biofuels. While fossil fuels still dominate 84% of the energy supply, the country aims for a 60% GHG reduction […]
“Threepio! We’re all going to be squashed! Tell them to shut down the garbage mashers on the detention level!” Deep inside the Death Star, the walls are closing in. Metal groans. Pipes shudder. Luke, Leia, Han, and Chewbacca are knee-deep in the Empire’s trash.Over the comm, C-3PO’s voice rises in panic. “Shut them all down! […]
Bioenergy dominates Brazil’s renewable landscape, supplying over half of the nation’s heat and 22% of its transport energy. The recently passed 2024 Future Fuel Law marks a major milestone, establishing national mandates for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), green diesel, and carbon capture integration. Simultaneously, Raízen is aggressively expanding its second-generation ethanol capacity, targeting 1.6 billion […]
