M&M’s faces a “dye-lemma”
In Virginia, ubiquitous color-coated chocolate candy M&M’s has made the switch to natural food dyes, in line with Make America Healthy Again goals, but are—for now—missing the blue and brown colors of its iconic six-color palette. Inc. reported that the company was unable to recreate the blue and brown colors for a reasonable cost. Alternatives were found for red, yellow, green, and orange. The new M&M’s will be available in August, and the company hopes to have all six colors back in rotation by 2028. “It’s the hardest thing I’ve had to do in my career,” Claire Hewitt, the senior director of ingredient transformation, internally known as the company’s “chief color officer,” told Wall Street Journal.
