Portugal’s Amble introduces cork‑detailed EV for short‑range mobility

June 29, 2026 |

In Portugal, Amble, a mobility company focused on lightweight electric vehicles, has created a cork-detailed buggy designed for short trips around campuses and resorts. Dubbed Amble One, the “buggy” is speed capped at 40 mph and was designed by experts across hospitality, industrial design, and e-bikes. Notably, the team included industrial designer Julian Hoenig, who has worked with design-forward firms Audi and Apple.

“Amble One keeps its structure exposed, with an open frame, flat windscreen, canvas roof, and broad stance over rugged tires,” according to a write-up in design firm dezeen. “Julian Hoenig has pointed to NASA’s lunar rover as a reference, and the connection reads through the visible electric platform… Aluminum, leather, cotton, and cork shape the cabin, while large orange screws mark the parts that can be removed or reconfigured. The dashboard bar uses the same diameter as motorcycle handlebars, allowing standard bike accessories to attach directly. A cork-clad steering wheel softens the touchpoint, adding a distinctly Portuguese material detail that makes it feel like a piece of furniture.”

Resorts in Utah, Mustique Island, and Loire Valley are among the early customers, with initial deliveries planned for 2027.
