Afyren unveils renewable propionic acid
In France, biobased carboxylic acid producer Afyren has launched a fully biobased propionic acid for cosmetics applications. Just months after partnering with South Africa-based microbiome skincare company Esse Skincare, Afyren is supporting the launch of Esse Barrier Rescue, described as the world’s first skincare product formulated with natural propionic acid. The intensively nourishing moisturizer combines propionic acid with ceramides to soothe extremely dry, reactive skin while reinforcing its natural ecosystem.
The product is now available worldwide to skincare professionals and consumers. Propionic acid is a naturally occurring short-chain fatty acid that helps maintain a balanced skin microbiome. Emerging research suggests it may help modulate inflammation, strengthen the skin barrier and support microbial balance.
