Biotech Open Platform builds €20-million bridge from lab to industrial scale
In Clermont-Ferrand, France, Biotech Open Platform has opened a €20-million (US$22.4-million) facility designed to bridge the gap between laboratory breakthroughs and industrial-scale biotechnology production.
Located within Michelin’s Innovation Park, the Sustainable Materials Center supports start-ups, industrial companies and R&D organizations as they develop, optimize, scale and validate fermentation-based processes under conditions representative of commercial production. Its integrated capabilities span fermentation, purification and bioprocess development, including a complete fermentation line with capacities of up to 15 m³ and semi-industrial purification systems.
Founded in 2024 by Danone, Michelin, DMC Biotechnologies, Crédit Agricole Centre France, Clermont Auvergne Innovation and Greentech, Biotech Open Platform aims to address one of biotechnology’s most persistent challenges: moving promising innovations beyond proof of concept.
“Every year, numerous biotechnology innovations demonstrate promising results in the laboratory,” the organization said in a press statement. “Yet many of them never progress beyond that stage. Between proof of concept and industrial deployment lies a critical step: scale-up. Biotech Open Platform was created specifically to address this challenge.”
