Weaving wonders: Kraig Biocraft Laboratories reaches milestone in spider silk project
In Michigan, Kraig Biocraft Laboratories, a leader in materials development based on spider silk, has announced a major milestone in Project Atlas. The bioengineering initiative aims to create entirely new classes of “super” materials with enhanced strength, toughness, and other properties.
The project has already resulted in the creation of multiple new transgenic lines, which are now progressing through the company’s evaluation pipeline. According to the company, early results have reinforced management’s confidence that Project Atlas will reshape the future of biomaterial development and significantly broaden the applications for spider silk and other super fibers.
“This project represents what I believe is the most advanced molecular biology work ever undertaken in material science,” said Kim Thompson, Founder and CEO of Kraig Labs. “We are creating an advanced platform, where multiple components work in unison to achieve very specific material outcomes. That level of coordinated engineering has never been attempted before in spider silk or biomaterials, to our knowledge.”
