U.S. ethanol industry eyes Panama as marine fuel gateway
In Panama, the U.S. Grains & BioProducts Council led a delegation of ethanol industry executives including representatives from POET, Eco-Energy and Edeniq to assess the feasibility of incorporating ethanol into Panama’s maritime fuel sector, meeting with government officials, the Panama Canal Authority and private operators earlier this month.
Panama’s position as one of the world’s busiest maritime hubs makes it a logical target for the U.S. ethanol industry, which is looking to marine fuel as its next major export market. The delegation evaluated regulatory, commercial and infrastructure requirements while gauging appetite among Panamanian stakeholders for ethanol as a lower carbon marine fuel alternative.
