Iino Shipping tests biofuel on rotor sail equipped tanker
In Japan, Iino Shipping and power company J-Power have completed a biofuel test voyage aboard the fuel transport ship Yodohime, the first time a Japanese power company has used biofuel on a vessel equipped with a wind propulsion auxiliary device.
The ship took on a 24% biofuel blend at Zhoushan Port in China on January 18 and completed the voyage from Australia to Japan on February 15. The rotor sail, a 24-meter cylindrical mast that uses the Magnus effect to generate additional propulsion, is expected to cut fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 6-10% when combined with the ship’s navigation optimization system.
The biofuel, derived from waste oil and blended with low-sulfur fuel oil, requires no engine modifications and is estimated to reduce lifecycle CO2 emissions by 80-90% compared to conventional fossil fuels.
