Spore door: Studio Det Levende Hus creates interior doors with mycelium cores

March 23, 2026 |

In Denmark, architecture studio Det Levende Hus has partnered with mycelium materials firm Rebound to create interior doors with a fungi core. The door was made by growing the mycelium into a mold to make rigid panels.

Rebound co-founder Jon Strunge told design publication dezeen that the collaboration aimed to “demonstrate how regenerative, high-performance mycelium-based materials open opportunities for new, innovative and scalable building components,”

The door will be used in Kaerhytten, a sustainable housing development designed by architect Jens Martin Suzuki‑Højrup and slated for completion in 2026. “Since we pass through doors every day without really noticing them, we saw an opportunity to transform this everyday experience into something more engaging,” Suzuki‑Højrup said.
