South Korea sets rules for zero carbon shipping routes
In South Korea, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries on Wednesday proposed detailed rules for a new green shipping route law that will govern eligible fuels, port infrastructure and route designation when the measure takes effect April 1, 2027.
The law is intended to support port to port shipping routes that pursue carbon free operations using low or zero carbon fuels and other clean technologies. The ministry calls it the world’s first dedicated law for establishing green shipping routes.
South Korea is pairing the law with a 2026 to 2035 ship development plan that calls for government support for 889 public and private eco friendly vessels. The strategy also includes research, commercialization of new technologies and expansion of alternative fuel infrastructure.
Officials said the new law broadens policy beyond support for individual ships to cover the wider shipping process, including the ports and fuel supply needed to operate greener vessels.
