GEA combines methanol fuel systems for new ships and retrofits
In Germany, GEA introduced a methanol fuel supply system at the SMM maritime trade fair in Hamburg that combines fuel conditioning and valve equipment into one package for new ships and retrofits. The company is preparing the system for use aboard a new generation of methanol ready chemical tankers operated by German shipping company John T. Essberger.
The Fuel2Engine system combines GEA’s methanol Booster Unit, which brings the fuel to the pressure and temperature required for engine injection, with its methanol Valve Train. GEA said the integrated package can reduce engineering and integration work for shipyards and operators.
GEA plans to complete its equipment supply for the Essberger project this fall. John T. Essberger is preparing the vessels for future methanol operation, allowing the fleet to adopt the fuel as availability, regulations and economics evolve without committing exclusively to methanol.
