Sleeve it to the beans: GoBean concept envisions coffee sleeves made from coffee waste
In Germany, design students believe the ubiquitous cardboard sleeves protecting hands from the head of to-go coffees could be replaced by coffee bean waste. Dubbed GoBean, the 100% compostable product was the brainchild of Aranza V. Sanchez and Song Yeon Lee, two design students from Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach, and consists of coffee grounds mixed with natural binders molded to encase a coffee cup. The material is both water and heat resistant, according to a write-up in Yanko Design.
By using a café’s own waste grounds, the concept gives owners an incentive to participate. Though still very much just in the conceptual phase, GoBean has been nominated for The Green Product Award. The international competition is organized by the NGO, Green Future Club.
