Okos Diagnostics envisions zero-waste test to measure microplastics in the body

June 8, 2026 |

In the Netherlands, eco-friendly diagnostics firm Okos Diagnostics has conceptualized a biodegradable test that would check for levels of microplastics in the human body.

Developed with input from industrial designer Luis Fernando Barrios, the project was called “Measuring the Invisible,” according to a write-up in Yanko Design.  The proposed zero-waste testing kit would detect the presence of persistent microplastics in the human body while itself being impermanent.

In theory, color intensity would communicate a person’s contamination levels. A simple detection kit would be of little use, since every human on Earth already has microplastics in their body.  The idea isn’t completely science fiction. Okos Diagnostics already offers testing kits with biodegradable, plant‑based rapid‑test cassette technology. Its product line includes kits for detecting COVID‑19, Influenza A/B, and RSV; H. pylori Infection; and Thyroid Stimulating Hormone.
