Shell puts partially-built Rotterdam blue H2 and biofuels project up for sale

April 28, 2026 |

In the Netherlands, Gas World reports Shell has put its partially built blue hydrogen and biofuels project in Rotterdam up for sale after deciding not to resume construction in 2025. The facility, launched in 2021, was designed to produce sustainable aviation fuel, renewable diesel, and blue hydrogen, but was halted due to weak competitiveness after $1.4 billion had been spent. Much of the equipment is already fabricated and installed, making it attractive for buyers seeking lower costs and faster timelines. The move reflects Shell’s renewed focus on oil and gas, amid challenging economics for hydrogen and low-carbon fuels in Europe.
