Shell game: Forbo turns cocoa waste into sustainable flooring
Marmoleum Cocoa is made with up to 98% natural raw materials, including linseed oil, wood flour, jute, and reclaimed cocoa shells sourced through Netherlands-based sustainable agritech company Kumasi Commodity Innovations.
The material has been used by Estonian architecture studio KOKO throughout Rae State Secondary School in Jüri, Estonia, where designers highlighted both its low-impact credentials and natural aesthetic. According to design publication dezeen, the shells create subtle variations in color and texture, adding visual character while supporting a more circular approach to construction.
The flooring also creates additional income for cacao-growing communities in West Africa.
