Algae-based batteries could replace disposables

In the United Kingdom, biodesigner Lucia Giron and the University of Cambridge’s Department of Biochemistry have created a series of algae-based battery prototypes. 

A specialized semi-permeable membrane enables gas exchange while limiting evaporation, while a filament-like electrode structure provides a textured surface for algae to attach and integrate, bringing the biological and electrical components into closer interaction.

Such batteries are known as biophotovoltaics and use photosynthesis to generate electricity. The team hopes their cyanobacteria-powered prototypes could be used for small applications, like remote controls and smoke detectors. 

“Our technology could replace millions of small disposable batteries with a much cleaner source of energy – that’s a huge environmental benefit and a really exciting prospect,” University of Cambridge professor Chris Howe told design publication dezeen.
