Shanghai Electric executive on Taonan green methanol project
In China, China Power News Network interviewed Ni Jianjun, deputy general manager of Shanghai Electric Shanghai Boiler Works, about Shanghai Electric’s Taonan project in Jilin, which is producing green methanol for shipping in a market where, as Mr. Ni said, “coal based methanol still dominates.” The project started production in July 2025, with first phase annual capacity of 50,000 tons.
Mr. Ni described Taonan as “the country’s first green methanol project combining green hydrogen with biomass gasification” to secure full process EU ISCC certification. He said the fuel is shipped from Taonan to Shanghai for bunkering and was supplied to the French cargo ship CMA CGM OSMIUM at Yangshan Port on March 5.
