China starts construction of first 2,000 ton hydrogen river hauler

April 2, 2026 |

In China, the China Classification Society said on March 31 that Guangdong Zhaohai Shipyard has begun building the nation’s first domestically inspected 2,000 ton hydrogen fuel inland cargo ship, a demonstration intended to test hydrogen propulsion under commercial cargo conditions.

Backed by Guangdong Yuntao Hydrogen Energy and CSSC Guangzhou, the program is framed as a step beyond small prototypes. The Classification Society’s Guangzhou office organized a specialist hydrogen team to run plan review, surveys and certification and to oversee fuel handling and safety during trials.

CCS calls the build an important practical model and says the program raises requirements for inspection, testing and technical services. If trials and certification succeed, the vessel will supply real world data on operations, regulation and inspection and will clarify the safety and compliance steps needed for wider adoption of hydrogen in inland bulk logistics.
