China opens comment period on inland methanol bunkering rules

April 2, 2026 |

In China, the Maritime Bureau of the Ministry of Transport on March 31 released a draft guide covering the technical and inspection rules for methanol bunkering vessels on inland waterways, with public comments due by April 10.

The draft sets out how newly built floating methanol refuelling units would be designed, inspected and certified before entering service. It also covers some units that may handle LNG or marine fuel oil alongside methanol. Under the proposal, equipment would need inspection approval before use, operators would submit technical and risk documents for review, and compliant units would receive an inland floating-facility safety and environmental certificate identifying them as methanol bunkering pontoons.
