Second-hand E85 vehicle demand soars in France
In France, Auto Infos reports that driven by the price gap at the pump with traditional fuels, the Superethanol-E85 is gradually installed in the pre-owned vehicle landscape. Still marginal in volume, this segment nevertheless shows a dynamic of continuous growth since 2025.
After a stabilization phase in 2024, the market for pre-owned vehicles compatible with Superethanol-E85 recorded a marked increase in 2025. According to the latest study by Auto Scout24, the European platform for digital classifieds, the registrations of E85 models increased by 16.6% in the first four months of the year compared to the same period in 2024. In January 2026, the market share of Flex-E85 engines on the second-hand market reached 0.66%, a new level. For the whole of 2025, the average share is 0.59%, for a total of 32 142 registrations. While these volumes remain marginal at the scale of the global second-hand vehicle market, the dynamic contrasts with the relative stagnation observed in the previous year, where the market share had stabilized around 0.5%.
The appeal for Superethanol-E85 is largely due to its pricing positioning. In February 2026, its average price is less than 0.73 euro per litre, about one euro less than the SP95-E10. Distributed in more than 4 000 service stations in France, this alternative fuel now benefits from a significant mesh on the territory.
In addition, an opinion study conducted in early January 2026 indicates that 58% of respondents consider Superethanol-E85 as a credible alternative to traditional fossil fuels for gasoline or hybrid vehicles, alongside electric. If this data reflects above all a perception, it testifies to an evolution of the image of this motorization.
