SEA-LNG urges EU to protect biomethane mass balance route
In the United Kingdom, industry coalition SEA-LNG urged the European Commission to preserve the mass balance terminal pathway for liquefied biomethane, arguing that it lets shipping use Europe’s existing LNG terminals and gas network rather than requiring dedicated liquefaction infrastructure. The call comes as the Commission prepares revisions to rules implementing the Renewable Energy Directive that will determine how the pathway is treated for greenhouse gas accounting and compliance.
SEA-LNG said liquefied biomethane bunker volumes grew about 100 fold in 2025, with most delivered through the mass balance terminal route. The coalition wants EU rules to recognize liquefaction by equivalence and recondenser liquefaction, preserve cross border mass balance mechanisms and assign emission values based on measured operating data.
