Hydrogen engine for large merchant ships completes onshore operation
In Japan, Japan Engine Corporation completed onshore operation of the world’s first hydrogen fuel engine for large merchant ships, achieving a hydrogen mixing rate above 95% and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by more than 95% compared with a conventional heavy oil engine. The engine uses high pressure direct injection to deliver hydrogen directly into the cylinders and includes double piping and other safeguards against hydrogen leakage.
The engine was developed with Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Yanmar Power Solutions under a Green Innovation Fund project led by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization.
It will be installed on a 17,500 DWT multipurpose ship being built at Onomichi Dockyard for Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and MOL Drybulk. Kawasaki will provide the marine hydrogen fuel system, with shipboard demonstration operations scheduled from April 2028
