UK maritime groups band together on alternative fuels
In the United Kingdom, 11 shipping, fuel and technology associations formed the UK Alternative Maritime Fuels Coalition to improve access to cleaner marine fuels and coordinate work on production, certification, supply infrastructure and new vessel technologies. The group includes organizations representing methanol, LNG, ammonia, hydrogen, biofuels, carbon capture, bunkering, cruise lines and shipowners.
The coalition will identify shared barriers and develop policy recommendations aimed at supporting investment, production and deployment of alternative maritime fuels. Members also want UK policy to remain fuel and technology neutral, using lifecycle emissions and verifiable performance to assess options.
The group plans to contribute evidence to the government’s forthcoming consultation on domestic maritime fuel regulation and is calling for part of the UK Emissions Trading Scheme’s maritime revenues to support alternative fuel production, port infrastructure and deployment.
