Rotterdam backs Evos tank expansion with new quay
In the Netherlands, the Port of Rotterdam Authority said on March 12 it will build a new inland shipping quay for Evos Rotterdam’s terminal expansion in Europoort, where the company plans to add five tanks with 67,500 cubic meters of storage for bio- and conventional methanol and ethanol on top of its existing 21 tanks and roughly 260,000 cubic meters of capacity.
The extra berth is meant to handle additional transhipment as Evos enlarges its storage footprint and as Rotterdam pushes to deepen its role in methanol and ethanol bunkering. The quay, which will include shore power, is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2028. Boudewijn Siemons, chief executive of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, and Evos chief executive Daan Vos signed the agreement on March 12.
The port framed methanol and ethanol as industrial feedstocks as well as shipping fuels, tying the project to broader energy and raw-material transition plans. In Rotterdam, bio-methanol bunkering rose from 3,900 tons in 2024 to nearly 12,000 tons in 2025, giving the expansion a fairly direct commercial backdrop. The added infrastructure is intended to support further storage and bunkering demand as Evos increases terminal activity in Europoort.
