Mumbai seeks suppliers for methanol bunkering push
In India, the Mumbai Port Authority issued an expression of interest on March 17 seeking suppliers that can bring methanol bunkering to Mumbai Harbour, splitting the process into two tracks: securing methanol with a well-to-wake carbon intensity of no more than 90 gCO2e/MJ, and building or arranging the storage, transfer and delivery systems needed to supply ships in port.
The document makes clear that Mumbai is not yet awarding supply rights. Instead, the port is sounding out companies that can show product availability, offtake arrangements, transport plans, storage and berth requirements, transfer rates, bunker delivery readiness, quality assurance, emergency response capacity and experience handling bunker fuels over the past three years. Respondents may bid for methanol supply, bunkering operations, or both as an integrated package.
MbPA said it wants lifecycle carbon data, digital carbon tracking for each ton delivered, details on renewable share in blended methanol, and a five-year business plan forecasting bunker sales and hub development. Any operator would also need to comply with the IMO IGF Code and secure permissions from India’s shipping and safety authorities. Proposals are due by email by May 19, after which MbPA may separately move to appoint an authorized methanol bunker supplier.
