Three Japanese firms launch Singapore ammonia bunker vessel study
In Japan, Sumitomo Corporation, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha and NYK Bulkship announced on March 17 that they had signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly carry out front-end engineering and design for a new ammonia bunkering vessel intended for deployment in Singapore, while also studying ownership structures suited to that market.
The agreement is meant to support Singapore’s wider ammonia value chain project, led by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and the Energy Market Authority, which is aimed at bringing lower carbon ammonia into both power generation and marine fuel use. In October 2025, the authorities selected a Keppel-led consortium to advance low and zero-carbon ammonia solutions on Jurong Island for those sectors. Sumitomo, a member of that consortium and the only recipient of a research and innovation grant under MPA’s Maritime Innovation and Technology Fund for the project, will lead the FEED work with K Line and the NYK group.
The three companies announced that they will examine the vessel’s basic design, technical specifications, safety and operating requirements, alongside a business structure and ownership model suited to Singapore’s emerging ammonia bunkering market.
