PowerCell to supply fuel cells for two hydrogen cargo ships

July 1, 2026 |

In Sweden, PowerCell Group has secured a contract to supply fuel cell systems for two liquid hydrogen powered cargo ships being built by Norwegian company LH2 Shipping. The deal, valued at approximately SEK 50 million, covers 4 megawatts of installed power based on PowerCell’s Marine System 225 platform, with deliveries scheduled for completion by 2028.

The vessels are designed for shortsea operation in the North Sea. Marine System 225 has marine type approval from Lloyd’s Register and RINA, and PowerCell said it intends to complete DNV type approval for the platform as part of the project. The companies also plan to establish a long-term service agreement covering the vessels’ operational lifetime.

The order adds to PowerCell’s presence in maritime hydrogen applications, following earlier deployments of the same platform in other vessel types.
