Ammonia-fueled ocean vessel departs China on first commercial voyage
In China, Sina Finance reports Exmar’s ammonia-fueled vessel Antwerpen completed its first cargo loading and departed Nanjing’s Qingjiang terminal on June 27 on its first commercial voyage. The ship loaded 30,214 tonnes of liquid ammonia bound for India, a cargo valued at roughly 132 million yuan.
The vessel runs on liquid ammonia as propulsion fuel, Nanjing Maritime Safety Administration coordinated safety oversight given the cargo’s toxicity and corrosive properties, monitoring fuel supply systems, leak detection, and emergency inertion equipment while patrol boats guarded loading operations around the clock.
Nanjing has previously launched a methanol-powered electric vessel fleet, and officials say the ammonia route adds to a broader green shipping framework covering ammonia, methanol, and LNG vessels at the port.
