Chinese firm signs deal to build methanol propulsion for cement carrier

July 1, 2026 |

In China, CSSC 711 Research Institute signed a contract with Jiangsu Zhenjiang shipyard to supply a methanol dual-fuel propulsion and fuel system for a 9,000-tonne cement carrier ordered by Germany’s Hartmann Group. The vessel, intended for coastal operation in Norway, will be the world’s first methanol dual-fuel cement ship once delivered, with completion expected by the end of 2027.

The ship will measure 120 meters and carry roughly 9,000 tonnes, running on diesel or methanol fuel. 711 Institute will supply the methanol dual-fuel generator sets, fuel supply system, SCR emissions treatment, and propulsion drive components, several of which are self-developed. The engines use in-cylinder methanol injection technology, with a methanol substitution rate of up to 90 percent and a ratio of two tonnes of methanol replacing one tonne of diesel.

The deal marks 711 Institute’s entry into the European shipbuilding market for methanol propulsion systems.
