In Spain, AIMPLAS’ Bread4PLA project, which aims to make biodegradable packaging for bakery and pastry products from bakery waste, has won a Green Award from the European Commission.

The European Commission called it one of the top 15 LIFE projects of the last 25 years. The Bread4PLA project aims to produce polylactic acid by fermenting discarded sliced bread and biscuits. The PLA can then be used to produce packaging film.

A collaboration with Panrico and Crupo Siro has also helped AIMPLAS make films that extend shelve life of cookies.
