Leveling the PLA-ying field: NatureWorks seeks tariffs on polylactic acid imports

April 20, 2026 |

In Minnesota, polylactic acid producer NatureWorks is urging the Office of the United States Trade Representative to slap tariffs on PLA resin and products entering the US from China, India and Thailand.

In a USTR filing obtained by Plastics Today, NatureWorks flagged PLA overcapacity and low prices due to unfair trade practices, particularly subsidized inputs and coordinated expansion in China.   “This has displaced domestic production and discouraged further US investment,” NatureWorks said. New capacity set to come online in Thailand and India will also contribute to global PLA oversupply.   NatureWorks also urged tariffs on downstream products such as 3D printer filaments and single-use flatware. “A level playing field is essential to rebuild the American PLA industry, including resin and downstream PLA part production, and maintain the use of US-grown agricultural feedstocks,” NatureWorks said in its filing.
