Lean times: Cultivated fat startup Cultimate Foods files for bankruptcy
In Germany, cell cultivated fat startup Cultimate Foods GmbH has filed for bankruptcy with the Charlottenburg Local Court. An administrator was assigned to the company on April 30 and will determine whether continued operations and restructuring are viable options.
Founded in 2022, the company intended for its lab-grown fat to help plant-based meat products better mimic the taste and texture of conventional meat. The company had raised €2.3 million (US$2.7 million) by the end of April 2024. In its filing, Cultimate Foods noted that the capital intensity of developing cell-cultured products and complex regulatory schemes impacted its profitability.
