IMO leaves net-zero shipping disputes for final November talks
In the UK, International Maritime Organization negotiators ended four days of talks in London on September 4 with concerns over the proposed Net-Zero Framework still unresolved, leaving one more working group meeting before the agency takes up the shipping climate rules in December.
Governments will return November 23-27 to continue negotiating changes to the draft MARPOL Annex VI amendments. The September meeting also ran out of time to consider implementation guidelines and further work on calculating the life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of shipping fuels, pushing both issues into the same November session.
The Marine Environment Protection Committee meets November 30-December 3. A separate session scheduled for December 4 could then resume consideration of the Net-Zero Framework after that process was adjourned in 2025.
