Nuclear container shipping study targets Atlantic route
In the United Kingdom, Lloyd’s Register, Maersk, the UK port of Felixstowe and the US port of Charleston launched the Pink Corridor project to determine what rules and safeguards would be needed for a nuclear powered container ship to operate between Britain and the United States.
Using a conceptual container ship, the study will examine how port access and commercial operation would work where maritime and nuclear regulations overlap, including requirements for security, emergency response and insurance.
Building on earlier Lloyd’s Register and CORE POWER work with Maersk on nuclear container shipping, the study’s initial findings could lead to a second phase covering engineering, regulation, legislation and nuclear safeguards.
