Hemspan plans £4M hemp-based building materials plant
Hemspan’s main offering is the BIOHAUS® system, a prefabricated, panelized building system that combines hemp insulation, hemp-based boards and structural timber to create energy-efficient, lower-carbon buildings. The company also produces individual hemp-based construction products, including insulation, construction boards, blocks and hemp-fiber/bio-resin cladding.
Dubbed Project Borders, the plant has received £980,000 in funding from South of Scotland Enterprise. “HEMSPAN® is the perfect example of the type of business SOSE wants to attract to our region, which is Scotland’s Natural Capital Innovation Zone,” Russel Griggs, chair of South of Scotland Enterprise, told Herald Scotland. “There is increasing demand for lower carbon, energy-efficient construction, which HEMSPAN® has the ability to help deliver, and transform the housebuilding sector.”
