Grimaldi adds ammonia-ready car carrier to EuroMed service

July 8, 2026 |

In Türkiye, Grimaldi Group has deployed the ammonia-ready Grande Istanbul on its EuroMed service linking Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, with calls at seven Turkish ports and capacity for 9,241 car-equivalent units. The company detailed the vessel’s role during a July 3 event at Autoport in Kocaeli.

The carrier is designed for future conversion to ammonia fuel and can use shore power while docked, allowing its engines to be switched off in port. Grimaldi said the ship reduces carbon dioxide emissions per unit of cargo by up to 50 percent compared with its previous-generation car carriers.

The Grande Istanbul is one of 17 ammonia-ready car and truck carriers ordered by Grimaldi. It transports electric and conventional vehicles, trucks, trailers and other rolling cargo between Türkiye, Northern Europe and Mediterranean markets.
