Germany’s DLR to test alternative fuels at sea on new research vessel
In Germany, the German Aerospace Center said it has begun construction of a floating research platform that will test alternative marine fuels and autonomous systems under real sea conditions, marking the keel laying of the vessel at the FSG Shipyard in Flensburg.
The 48-meter vessel, named MODULARIS, will serve as a testbed for fuel cells, batteries, and fuels including methanol, ammonia and hydrogen, as well as navigation and automation systems. The federal government is financing the project with 36 million euros. The ship is expected to be completed in 2027 and will be home-ported in Kiel.
