Damen wins approval for methanol-powered tug design

May 21, 2026 |

In the Netherlands, shipbuilder Damen said it has received class and flag state approval for a methanol-powered tug, clearing a regulatory hurdle that had blocked smaller vessels from adopting the fuel.

Damen worked with Bureau Veritas and the Dutch flag state to develop a risk-based approval process that fills that gap. The company said the approval paves the way for methanol propulsion across its broader tug range.
