Germany launches funding measure for e-fuels and their CCU-based precursors

October 12, 2026 |

In Germany, the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) is launching a new funding measure for the innovative production of e-fuels and their CCU-based precursors. Companies, universities, research institutions are invited to submit their project ideas. The focus is on new technologies and processes for climate-friendly fuels and their CCU-based precursors. Pre-competitive research, development and innovation projects along the value chain of e-fuels are funded. For example, this includes:

·      new production processes for current- and hydrogen-based e-fuels,

·      innovative process chains, components and materials from manufacturing to use,

·      novel catalysts with improved selectivity, activity and service life, as well as new reactor concepts,

·      highly integrated processes for the production of climate-neutral fuels,

·      simulations and modelling of new process management and operating strategies,

·      investigations of regulatory, security and environmental aspects and

·      CCU technologies and CCU-based precursors necessary for e-fuel production.

The research is intended in particular to aim at significant improvements in efficiency, cost-effectiveness and sustainability. In addition, research topics and results are to be prepared in the context of science communication and will be made available to the general public in a low-threshold manner.

Projects with a significant innovation gain and a clear perspective for application and transfer are being sought. Participation of companies is expressly desired. The funding extends to a technology maturity level of a maximum of 3 and is intended in particular to create the scientific and technological foundations for later demonstration and application projects. In addition, research topics and results are to be prepared in the context of science communication and will be made available to the general public in a low-threshold manner.

Applications close on November 30, 2026.
