Deltamarin joins EU hydrogen engine project targeting long-distance shipping

May 13, 2026 |

In Finland, ship design firm Deltamarin has joined H4PERION, a four-year Horizon Europe project coordinated by the University of Vaasa that aims to develop and demonstrate a full-scale hydrogen-capable internal combustion engine for long-distance maritime use.

The project brings together 16 partners from seven European countries covering ship design, engine development, vessel operation, classification and research. Key technologies under development include fuel-flexible engine concepts, hydrogen supply systems and emissions control, to be tested aboard Wasaline’s ferry Aurora Botnia and in parallel full-scale laboratory conditions.

Deltamarin will support onboard installation integration, validate performance targets and assess how the engine concept can be transferred to other vessel types.

H4PERION also covers safety, regulatory development and crew and port personnel training to support broader hydrogen adoption in shipping.
