Finnlines begins construction of first methanol-powered Hansa Superstar vessel

May 21, 2026 |

In Finland, Finnlines announced that construction has begun on the first of three new methanol-powered ro-pax vessels at a Chinese shipyard, with the ship scheduled to enter service in summer 2028.

The Hansa Superstar class vessels are designed for the route between Finland and Germany and will carry both freight and passengers. Finnlines is part of Italy’s Grimaldi Group, which this week separately ordered fuel systems for six additional methanol-capable vessels for Mediterranean routes, suggesting a broader push by the group toward methanol across its European fleet. Finnlines said the three-vessel program represents a total investment of 500 million euros.
