Exxon execs told investors in 2020 that algae was the future but scientists told them otherwise
In Texas, the Wall Street Journal reports that Exxon executives told investors that algae had the potential to be a viable short term biofuel feedstock back in 2020 just a week after scientists told them that algae was struggling to perform outside of lab conditions. Documents seen by the WSJ show that executives knew the $500 million investments planned for algae production wouldn’t meet the stated goals but pushed forward anyway, despite angers scientists who knew the plans would flop.
