Bilbao LNG terminal adds certified bio-LNG service

February 19, 2026 |

In Spain, Bahía de Bizkaia Gas said it has begun offering bio-LNG loading at its terminal in the Port of Bilbao after obtaining ISCC certification, enabling the plant to supply renewable biomethane-based LNG to ships and road tankers with verified sustainability credentials.

The certification confirms compliance with European Commission sustainability criteria and ensures traceability of the biomethane used to produce the fuel. Under the European Union’s interconnected infrastructure framework, biomethane can be injected into the gas grid by producers and later purchased with accompanying Proofs of Sustainability that certify emissions reductions tied to the renewable origin.

BBG said the new service does not require changes to existing loading operations. Vessels and tanker trucks are supplied in the same manner as conventional LNG, with certification handled through documentation rather than physical segregation of fuel streams.

The terminal, owned by the Basque Energy Agency and Enagás, said the service connects biomethane producers with LNG customers at Bilbao and expands its offerings as demand grows for renewable alternatives in marine and industrial fuel markets.
