Wasaline boosts ferry’s battery capacity fivefold

February 19, 2026 |

In Finland, Wasaline said on February 18 that its ferry Aurora Botnia has completed sea trials following a battery upgrade that increases onboard capacity from 2.2 megawatt hours to 12.6 megawatt hours, the largest battery installation yet on a RoPax vessel, with the system approved for service by DNV.

The new battery packs, supplied by AYK Energy, store nearly five times more energy than the previous system. The upgrade was carried out partly during normal operations and finalized at BLRT Repair Yards in Finland, with system integration completed by Wärtsilä. Danfoss configured and updated the vessel’s drives, while Foreship handled evaluation and basic design.

Jonas Teir, Technical Director of Wasaline, said the propulsion system was upgraded during docking and battery optimization continued after the vessel returned to service.

Aurora Botnia, which operates between Vaasa and Umeå, runs on biogas and batteries. The expanded battery capacity is intended to improve energy efficiency on the northernmost year round international ferry route in the world.
