BioHarvest signs pact to pursue endangered fragrance
In British Columbia, plant-based health biotech BioHarvest Sciences has signed an exclusive manufacturing and supply agreement with an existing fragrance partner in the United Arab Emirates for a rare and endangered fragrance plant cell culture. The undisclosed plant is threatened by overharvesting and habitat loss, and its fragrance is considered one of the world’s most valuable natural fragrance materials, with premium grades selling for tens of thousands of dollars per kilogram.
The agreement builds on BioHarvest’s successful completion of the first stable cell culture created for the plant in question. BioHarvest says it can now consistently produce the plant’s sesquiterpenes and chromones—natural compounds valued for their slow evaporation, depth and long-lasting base notes—at scale.
Under the agreement, BioHarvest will reserve manufacturing capacity and begin limited production in the first half of 2027. Planned production is expected to reach 20 metric tons, with product specifications to be finalized in the coming months. If the product is delivered as planned, BioHarvest could recognize $20 million to $30 million in revenue.
