Fido approved: Wacker plant-based additives add meaty flavor to pet food

August 17, 2026 |

In Germany, Wacker has received approval from the European Commission to use its vegan amino acids L-cystine and L-cysteine as sensory additives in pet food for all animal species.

The company’s FERMOPURE® VEGAN L-CYSTEINE and FERMOPURE® NATURAL L-CYSTINE are plant-based, fermentation-derived ingredients that can be used as flavor precursors and components in pet food. During the Maillard reaction, they react with reducing sugars to produce savory and meaty flavors, helping improve the palatability of pet food.

The EU approval expands the applications for Wacker’s amino acid products to include pet food. The ingredients are effective at low doses and can be used in a range of formats, including liquids, chewable products, tablets and powders.

WACKER produces the ingredients through fermentation using plant-based glucose. L-cystine is produced using a strain of E. coli and then purified, while L-cysteine is produced by converting L-cystine through electrolysis. The process avoids animal-derived raw materials and provides an alternative to conventionally sourced L-cysteine.
