Ginkgo Bioworks, Acies Bio partner on engineered Aspergillus niger for industrial protein production
Ginkgo has engineered the microbe to improve its performance in large-scale fermentation, including making it easier and less costly to grow, reducing unwanted natural byproducts and improving consistency. The strain can be used to produce proteins and enzymes for applications ranging from food ingredients and dietary supplements to detergents, animal feed and sustainably produced foods.
Under the collaboration, Acies Bio will use its SmartRoute™ platform to adapt Ginkgo’s fungal chassis strains for customer-specific production. Acies Bio can optimize protein expression, develop upstream and downstream processes, validate performance and scale fermentation to volumes of up to 30 cubic meters at its own biomanufacturing facility.
The partnership is designed to provide customers with an integrated path from production strain to commercial manufacturing, eliminating the need to coordinate strain development, process optimization and scale-up separately.
