European ethanol producers face tightening corn supplies
In the Netherlands, Platts reports European ethanol producers are rushing to secure fourth-quarter corn supplies as heatwaves damage crops and the Russia-Ukraine war disrupts traditional import routes. EU corn production for 2026-27 is forecast at 52.5 million metric tons, down 4.3 million tons from the previous year, with France, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Romania reporting acreage declines. Non-GMO corn is particularly scarce, while Polish farmers are holding out for higher prices. Ukrainian imports face security and infrastructure constraints, while high natural gas costs and transportation expenses are further squeezing ethanol producers’ margins.
