Bezos bets on better threads with $34M fund

May 25, 2026 |

In California, the Bezos Earth Fund has committed $34 million to develop biodegradable fibers to replace cotton, polyester and viscose in the fashion industry, with hopes for consumer sales within three to five years.

Grant recipients include Columbia University, Fashion Institute of Technology, University of California, Berkeley, Clemson University, and the Cotton Foundation. The funds will support work on plastic-free synthetic silk and  fabrics derived from bacteria, agricultural waste, and other nontraditional feedstocks.

“When you start asking questions about what clothes could be made of, the answers are incredible,” Lauren Sánchez Bezos said in a statement to the Wall Street Journal. “The future of fashion is being invented right now.”
