September 7, 2026 |

In California, the maker of multipurpose maintenance spray and DIY mainstay WD-40 has unveiled a biobased formulation. WD-40 Company Limited, which calls the new product WD-40 Specialist Bio Lubricant Multi-Use, said the product is 85% biobased and meets EU Ecolabel standards.

The biobased version is designed to maintain the original’s performance in penetrating, lubricating, and protecting joints and other moving parts, with applications including garden tools, bicycle maintenance, and light industrial equipment.

“For more than 70 years, WD-40 Company has helped people solve everyday problems,” Steve Brass, president and CEO, told Business Green. “With the launch of WD-40 Specialist Bio Lubricant Multi-Use, we are extending that legacy and proving that our product can meet strict sustainability standards without compromising effectiveness. This launch is also a demonstration of our commitment to environmental stewardship, practical innovation and doing the right thing.”

The name WD-40 comes from “Water Displacement, 40th formula,” because it was the 40th iteration of the product tested by inventor Norm Larsen.
